Technical Data Sheet - Taftflex™ 6221

Directions

Application Method

  • Cleaning: Clean the surface with a strong jet of compressed air, sandblast, or solvent to ensure the surface
is clean, dry, free of oil, and grease, and of sound quality.
  • Activating/Priming: Activators and/or primers may be required to achieve optimal adhesion depending on the nature of substrates.
  • Application of sealant: Cut tip to desired shape and size. Puncture airtight seal. Install with a hand or
power-operated gun and extrude the sealant into the joint. Clean excess sealant using a hard rubber plate or finger wet with a soap solution.

Caulking Method

  • TAFTFLEX6221 can be applied by a manual or pneumatic gun. After application, use a putty knife to smooth the joint with soapy water.
  • This product should be used within 24 hours of opening the cartridge or sausage; otherwise, the sealant could harden inside.
  • Do not apply at a temperature under 5 °C. In cold weather, store the cartridges at about 20 °C before use.
  • Avoid any contact with non-cured MS, hybrid PU or silicone sealants as well as with alcohols or ammonia during curing

Cleaning Method

  • Always clean the bonding substrates with an appropriate cleaning agent prior to applying the polyurethane adhesive. This will ensure good bonding integrity when fully cured.

Storage Conditions

  • Store polyurethane sealant in a cool and dry area (15-25ºC), away from direct sunlight. Storing this product
otherwise may reduce shelf life and affects physical properties adversely. Do not store the polyurethane for more than 30ºC as it may affect the viscosity of the compound and make it difficult for caulk. This product has 12-month shelf life if stored at the recommended temperature.

Handling Precaution

  • Refer to Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) before using this product. Always wear personal safety gear when handling this product. (Impervious gloves, eyes protection goggles, respiratory mask.)

Frequently Asked Questions

One Component Polyurethane (PU) sealant or adhesive is a thermoset elastomeric compound that will react with moisture to form a structural bond that will not only seal but bond strongly to most materials at room temperature. It will cure to become a tough and flexible sealant that provides excellent bond strength.

Generally, polyurethane sealant has higher bond strength after curing completely as compared to Silicone sealant even though both are equally bonding, sealing and caulking. Polyurethane sealant is composed of organic compounds and silicone sealant is made of inorganic in its chemistry. This makes silicone sealant able to withstand prolonged UV exposure (up to 10 years) without any degradation.

Taftflex™ Polyurethane Sealants is applied in a wide variety of applications as it provides excellent sealing and bonding functions, especially for concrete gap filling, metal bonding for door fabrication, and panel bonding for bus & truck assembly. The use of sealants enhances the bond integrity and aesthetic outlook of the finished assembly since it takes away fasteners and screws for some of the more critical applications.

  • Tenacious and yet flexible after curing.
  • Able to seal tight to prevent water ingress.
  • Bonds well to most materials like wood, concrete, metals and glass.
  • Has aging resistance for indoor applications.
  • Paintable after curing.
  • Good temperature resistance.
  • Tear and abrasion resistance.

Before using Polyurethane Sealant, the right tools are essential to ensure smooth dispensing from the cartridge.

  1. Cutter or utility knife to cut off the tip of the nozzle.
  2. Heavy-duty caulking gun to deliver the sealant out from the cartridge.
  3. Seal off the nozzle opening with a tape or plug when cartridge is not in used.
